  • Delaware Roofing: Top Asphalt Shingle Roofing Products We Love

Shingle roofs continue to be very popular with Delaware homeowners, given their excellent combination of durability and affordability. However, not all shingle roofing products are made equal, and choosing high-performing shingles with a proven track record of customer satisfaction is the key to extracting value from your roofing investment.

Delaware Roofing: Top Asphalt Shingle Roofing Products

Factors that contribute to the relative quality of asphalt shingles include:

    • Warranty protections – the more generous and inclusive the warranty, the more confidence the brand tends to inspire
    • Manufacturer reputation – companies that commit extra research and development resources to their products tend to have better performance track records
    • Quality of materials – this is an especially important consideration with composite shingles, which show wide variations in quality and durability

Delaware’s Most Trusted Shingle Roofing Products

Some of the most popular and widely trusted shingle roofing products on the DE market include:

    • GAF Timberline and Lifetime shingles. GAF’s Timberline shingles offer an attractive natural wood shake appearance, while its Lifetime line offers classic beauty and excellent durability at a fraction of the cost of expensive slate or wood shakes. Both product families are renowned for outstanding fire resistance, excellent stain and algae protection, and one of the most generous and inclusive warranties in the industry. This is the product we recommend and install most often.
    • Owens Corning Duration shingles. Available in a wide range of colors and styles, Owens Corning Duration shingles deliver outstanding value for an affordable price. With thick textures, generous dimensions, exceptional strength, a limited lifetime warranty, and wind resistance of up to 130 MPH, Owens Corning Duration shingles hold strong year in and year out. Their website has a main tool for designing your next roof – try it out!
    • IKO shingles. In business since the 1950s, IKO is now reputed the world over as one of the leading providers of residential roofing shingles. The company’s most popular lines include Cambridge shingles and Armourshake shingles, both of which offer distinct advantages. The Cambridge line enhances your home’s curb appeal, while its heavy weight is ideally suited to the New Jersey climate. For added durability, the Armourshake line has best-in-class impact resistance and provides an effective deterrent against algae as well as the harshest of natural elements. Although not as popular in use as GAF shingles, IKO has nevertheless proved it offers quality & durability shingles for its customers.

While this is not an exhaustive list, these three manufacturers have distinguished themselves with DE homeowners for providing trustworthy, reliable products at prices that deliver excellent value. They are excellent starting points for further research into asphalt shingles that will perform well in the face of the seasonal extremes seen in Delaware’s weather patterns.

  • Extend the Life of Your Roof With Reflective Roof Coating

Extend the Life of Your Roof With Reflective Roof Coating

Did you know that applying a reflective roof coating could increase the lifespan of your roof, reduce heat energy costs and increase UV and waterproofing protection for the roof?

While the roof coatings developed a generation ago may have had their limitations, those on the market today deliver a much higher level of performance, helping guard against a wide range of potential problems.

Your specific roof coating options will depend on the substrate material used to construct your roof; there are tar-based products for asphalt roofs, as well as acrylic and urethane coatings meant for single-ply roofing designs. In all cases, these coatings are formulated to protect against the three deadliest enemies to the health of your roof: sun, rain, and corrosion.

Extend the Life of Your Roof With Reflective Roof Coating

Avoid Three Common Problems By Coating Your Roof

Roof coatings create a resilient barrier between the elements and the uppermost layers of your roofing material. This barrier provides essential protection against:

    • Sun damage. Heat and ultraviolet light both wear down the membranes on the surface and the subsurface of your roof, causing it to age. Roof coatings slow this process down, often adding years to the life of your roof.
    • Waterproofing is another essential performance feature of roof coatings. However, it is recommended that you trust leak protection to a professional since advanced techniques must be used to secure areas with higher levels of penetration, such as vents and around the perimeter of roof-mounted HVAC components.
    • If you’ve opted for a metal roof, protecting it from corrosive elements should be one of your top priorities. While oxidation isn’t as big a problem for asphalt shingle roofs, coatings also inhibit the damage that air exposure causes over time.

Additional Benefits of Reflective Roof Coating

    Improved Energy Efficiency

A reflective roof coating can significantly improve the energy efficiency of your roof. Some roof coating products offer reflective properties, which can direct between 60 percent and 85 percent of sunlight away from your roof. Not only do these reflective coatings provide an extra level of protection against sun damage, they can also help you minimize the effects of summertime heat gain. Heat striking your roof will seep into your home, causing the interior temperature to rise. During the summer months, this added heat will force you to work your air conditioner or cooling system harder to keep things comfortable indoors. That, in turn, will send your energy bills in the wrong direction.

    Environmentally Friendly

One final peripheral benefit of roof coatings is that they help reduce waste by extending the life of your roof and minimizing the amount of debris produced during maintenance and repair. Today, most coatings are specially formulated for environmental safety as well, so you don’t have to worry about production techniques or dangerous chemicals.

If lowering roof maintenance costs, making your roof more energy efficient and extending roof life all sound good, consider applying roof coating. If you’re already re-roofing, or building a new residence, you should also consider using lighter-colored shingles.

  • Featured Project: Shingle & Flat Roofing Installation in Wilmington DE

Shingle and Flat Roofing Installation, Wilmington DE 19810

Today we’d like to feature a re-roofing project we did last fall in Wilmington, Delaware. The homeowner was shopping around for a local contractor to replace an aging roof on his property. There were shingles missing, some were damaged by hail. Additionally, many flashing strips were rusty or chipped, and algae took over the northern side of the roof. There was a small leak around the chimney as well.

In other words, the old roof needed to go – repairs weren’t going to cut it!

The homeowner wanted high quality shingles that could withstand East Coast’s harsh weather conditions for decades to come. Additionally, he needed flat roofing system reinstalled over the attached garage.

After a thorough inspection of the roofing structure – both interior and exterior check was done – we determined that tearing the old roofing material off was necessary, as the damage was too significant. Wood decking needed to be repaired/replaced, and this would build a solid foundation for the new roofing material.

After some research, the homeowner selected GAF Timberline HD Lifetime asphalt shingles, the #1-selling shingles in North America. We also decided on GAF flat roofing system for the small section over the garage.

All Roofing Solutions has been helping Delaware homeowners transform their homes from old to new for well over 15 years – we are fully licensed and insured to do roofing & siding work in DE & PA!

  • Cedar Roof Maintenance: Common Problems & Solutions

Cedar Roof Maintenance: Common Problems & Solutions

    Cedar Roof Maintenance

Cedar shake roofs have a unique and striking appearance, and make an excellent complement to rustic houses and homes with wooden exteriors. However, maintaining cedar roofs requires extra attention, and many homeowners eventually find themselves in need of cedar roof repairs. To preserve your cedar roof and minimize the need for roofing repairs, it’s important that you recognize common problems and learn how to address them.

Cedar Roof Maintenance: Common Problems & Solutions

Problem: Moss is building up on your cedar shake roof.

Solution: Affixing copper or zinc strips to your roof’s ridge caps will discourage the growth of moss. It is vital to prevent moss from building up, as it can trap moisture in your cedar roofing panels. Over time, excess moisture will damage the panels and may even cause leaks in the interior of your home.

Problem: Nearby coniferous trees shed their needles on your cedar roof.

Solution: Any accumulated debris in your cedar roofing panels can cause major problems. In addition to conifer needles, you need to keep your roof clear of dirt, branches and leaves. Professional cleaning is the recommended course of action.

Problem: You’re unsure of which preservatives to use on your cedar roof.

Solution: In addition to looking for preservatives and finishes that are specifically labeled for use on cedar shake roofs, be sure to choose a product that repels water, protects against UV damage and comes with a performance guarantee.

Problem: You want to wash your roof, but aren’t sure which techniques are and aren’t safe.

Solution: Power washers can be used on cedar roofs, so long as you follow proper techniques. Cedar roofs are subject to Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau (CSSB) guidelines and standards, so be sure to consult them before power-washing your roof. Better yet, entrust the job to a contractor.

  • Slate Roofing on a Budget: Composite Slates

Slate Roofing on a Budget: Composite Slates

Slate Roofing Repairs, Newark DE 19713

Today’s homeowners have a wide range of roofing options to choose from, including both natural and composite slates. While natural slate roofing is among the most beautiful roofing options available for your home, it also comes with many drawbacks and a sizeable price tag. This is where composite roof comes in.

Today’s composite slates offer significant advantages over natural slate roofing: they look like the real thing but are lighter, easier to install and less expensive.

    Composite Slate Benefits

A composite, or “synthetic”, slate roof is a manufactured product, composed of engineered polymer and other materials combined to make an attractive, durable and affordable roofing option. If you’re looking for a more unique, high-end look for their roof, composite slate is an excellent option.

Slate Roofing on a Budget: Composite Slates

Benefits of a composite slate roof include:

    • Cost Effectiveness: First and foremost, composite slate roof materials are considerably less expensive than natural slate. In addition, installation costs are significantly lower as well.
    • Lightweight construction: One of the major drawbacks to a natural slate roof is its weight. Because traditional slate roofing is a natural quarried stone product, it is very heavy, and tends to break more easily. In fact, the roof support & truss systems of many homes are not built to bear the weight of natural slate roofing materials, forcing homeowners into additional costs. In comparison, composite slate is very lightweight. Generally weighing less than half its natural counterpart (often a quarter of the weight of real slate), composite roofing can be installed on almost any home – no special reinforcement, straps or battens necessary.
    • Ease of installation: Unlike real slates, whose fragility requires extreme care in nailing, composite slates can be installed using standard roofing nails, shot by pneumatic nail gun. They cut with a utility knife for fitting. This mean faster, and cheaper, installation.
    • Style and color options: The look of natural slate roofs tend to be limited by the availability of natural stone. As a manufactured product, composite slate roofs are available in a wide variety of colors and styles that can be used to complement the curb appeal of any home.
    • Proven durability: Natural stone slates tend to be easily damaged by falling branches and hail. Composite slate typically lasts much longer than natural slate, and is often warranted for 40 to 60 years. Most composite slate roofs are also virtually maintenance free. They are resistant to wind, fireproof, and freeze/thaw resistant, providing a longer lifespan than many other roofing materials.
    • Mold resistance: The materials used in the manufacture of composite slate roofing can be chosen for their resistance to mold, which keeps your home healthier.

Installing slate roofing while not as complex as with natural slate still requires specialized skills and tools. If you’re considering slate roofing, contact All Roofing Solutions, your leading Delaware & Pennsylvania roofing contractor with over 15 years of experience in roofing installation & repair. We’ll be happy to provide a comprehensive inspection of your roof, discuss roofing alternatives, and offer a FREE estimate for your installation.
