- Check for any penetrations in the roof; these are, by a wide margin, the most common source of roof leaks. They are normally found within a few feet of the interior ceiling location where the leak appears to be centered.
- Remove shingles in the area where you suspect the leak is located, and look for telltale signs like water stains and rotting structural underlayments.
- If you still can’t find the leak, enlist the help of an assistant. Have one person stay inside at the apparent source of the leak and have the other go up on the roof with a water supply. Work systematically by wetting localized areas of the roof with the water supply until the person inside sees water start to dribble from the ceiling. By notifying the person on the roof when the interior leak appeared, it will be easy to localize the leak to a specific area.
- Clear shingles from the affected area of the roof, leaving a few feet of open space on all sides of the leak.
- Assess the condition of the shingles, as well as the condition of underlying elements of the roof. Step #1 – Property Protection

Whether we’re replacing a shingle, slate, or metal roof, surface preparation is always the same.

Our first job is to ensure that your entire property is fully protected while roofing replacement is underway. This includes siding, walls, plants, bushes, etc. We use tarps and protection plywood so that your property is not damaged in any way.

Step #2 – Removal of Old Roofing Material

In the majority of situations, all old shingles have to be completely removed in order to inspect wood decking. Ensuring the integrity of the decking is a very important part of the roofing replacement process and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Step #3 – Thorough Roofing Inspection

Every roofing replacement process begins with a thorough inspection of the wood decking. Any soft, wet, or rotted wood needs to be replaced to create a solid base for your new roofing materials. This is very important because only when you have a solid base for your roofing structure your shingles will stay intact.

Also, wood sheeting needs to be inspected to make sure that it is attached to the roof rafters the right way. Unfortunately, many roofing contractors do not check for missing nails during the removal of old roofing material. They install new shingles without re-nailing the old wood decking. After the new shingles are installed you might be impressed at the sight of the whole structure, but after several weeks you will see many bumps on your roof.

We re-nail the whole wood decking so that the roof is fully secured.

Step #4 – Preparing The Roof Surface For Shingles
- Drip Edge Installation – After wood decking is prepared we install drip edge at all edges of the roof. A drip edge is a piece of metal bent at 90 degrees to prevent rain from getting underneath roofing material on all edges.
- Ice and water shield installation – The next step is installing an “ice and water shield” which is a special type of roofing underlayment. Ice and water shield sticks to the wood decking which prevents any water leaks. It must be installed at the bottom of the roof and at all roof penetrations (chimneys, pipe flanges, roof connections, etc.).
- Roofing felt installation – After the ice and water shield is applied, the rest of the roof needs to be covered with roofing felt. Roofing felt prevents shingles from sticking to the wood. We always use heavy-duty #30 roofing felt.
Step #5 – New Roofing Material Installation

After the above steps are completed and the roof base is ready, we start laying out the new roofing material, working from the bottom up, followed by step and/or counter flashing, ridge vents, and ridge capping installation, as needed.

Step #6 – Site Cleanup

We clean the job site daily and thoroughly. We believe that we have to leave our job site cleaner than it had been before we came in.
