How to Find a Quality Roofing Contractor

How to Find a Quality Roofing Contractor

There will come a time when your home will need roof repairs and eventually a new roof altogether. Hiring the right roofer is the next step in the process, but don’t rush through this important decision.

Finding any roofing contractor is easy; finding a quality roofer is quite more difficult. This job is more important than ever, as your home is likely to be the most valuable possession you’ll own in your life.

Make sure you hire a professional who will do the job properly, on time, keeping glitches to a minimum.

Shopping for a skilled & reliable roofing contractor is much like shopping for anything else with a large price tag. Do your homework to learn about each potential candidate before taking the plunge with any particular company.

How to Find a Quality Roofing Contractor

Tips for finding a reliable roofer include:

  • Word of Mouth. Ask your friends, family, or co-workers who they recommend for roof repairs. Call your local Chamber of Commerce for recommendations too.
  • Interviews. Contact several roofing companies and invite them to give you a free estimate for your repairs. Ask them to bring references, and notice if they show up on time. Reliability and exceptional customer service are important.
  • Credentials. Choose a roofing contractor that is licensed and insured in your home state.
  • Comparisons. Compare prices, estimates and money-down policies. Ten percent down is customary; anything more than 50 percent down could cause you to raise your eyebrows. Compare the materials each contractor prefers to be sure your roof will be repaired or replaced with the best quality available for the price you are paying.
  • Time Frame. Find out how long the job will take to determine if the contractor’s schedule meshes with yours.
  • Financing. New roof installations can be pricey. A qualified roofing contractor that provides financing could be the right choice depending on your individual situation.
  • Online. Check the roofer’s online reviews at sites like Google+, Yelp, InsiderPages, or ask around on Facebook and Twitter.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions throughout the hiring process. Home repairs are fraught with contracts, fine print, and probably a series of roofing terms you may not understand. Roofing professionals are homeowners just like you and know you want the best for your home. They are used to explaining their vocabulary and process. Be sure you know what to expect from your contractor before the project starts.

I liked your point about comparing prices between roofers. It seems important to know that ten percent down is what someone should expect when hiring a roofer. It also seems like a good idea to compare the roofing materials a contractor uses to make sure that your roof will be repaired with durable materials and tools that will work properly.

Word of mouth and interviews are a great way to get a feel for what contractor you like. In addition, I think your suggestion to check credentials should not be over looked. Roofing being a “blue collar” industry, there are a lot of contractors out there who are not licensed or certified in any way.

I need to get my roof redone after this big rain storm we had a few weeks ago. I don’t want to pay a fortune, but I do want a quality roof at the end of the project. How can I know a roofing company is going to give me the best roof for the price?

I really like your tip about finding a contractor who has the same time frame as yours. It is extremely important for me that I will have some time that overlaps with my contractor so that I can check up on his progress, and sees if he needs anything. If I don’t see him at all, I can’t really see any of the progress, and make sure that we are on track to finish at the decided time.

I would really like to find a good roofing contractor soon. I have been noticing that many of my shingles are falling off, which is bad news. I just built my home a few years ago, so I didn’t think that I would already be experiencing these problems. It is definitely important to me that my roofing contractor is of good quality and can get the work done in a timely manner. Thanks for your suggestions, it will be really helpful when I start looking for a contractor!

That is really interesting that word of mouth is one of the best strategies to finding a home repair specialist. It makes sense that a person is worth their weight in their job skills via word of mouth promoting. I guess I should be asking my neighbors about all these things.

My wife and I are building our own home. I am pretty handy, but I don’t know much about roofs. That is such an important part of a home, so I want to find the most qualified roofing contractor.

Earlier this year I had to find roofing contractor. I have searched online and compare some. But eventually hired this one who my neighbor recomended me. Word of mouth is always a best choice.
