Shingle Roofing Repairs
With constant exposure to the elements, roof shingles have to bear a heavy burden over their lifetime. Eventually, it’s inevitable that they will wear down.
If you have damaged roof shingles, it’s essential that you repair the problem promptly. Otherwise, you could end up with a leaky roof and, potentially, serious structural damage to your home’s roof, attic, and frame.
Common shingle roofing repairs include:
- Shingle deterioration over time due to exposure to sun, rain, snow, wind, and other weather elements: Thermal expansion, IR radiation, and UV light from the sun are to blame for the majority of issues related to sun exposure over time.
- Damage from hail, wind, or ice dams: Ice dams can be more than a nuisance. While shingle roofing is made to withstand assaults from Mother Nature, no roof can hold up to the most severe weather. An expert roofing contractor may be able to repair/replace individual shingles. In some cases, however, your roof may be beyond repair and need complete replacement.
- Roof valley damage: A common collector for leaves, limbs, snow, and ice, roof valleys can be problematic at times. Keeping your roof free of debris encourages the natural downward flow of water, which helps to keep your shingle roofing in good shape.

Pros & Cons of Shingle Roofing
Relatively easy to install, affordable, and durable, composition shingles come in a large selection of types, brands, and colors. Shingle roofs require little maintenance and can be walked on without damaging the material. Most brands offer Class A fire protection. Additionally, shingle roofing can be treated against mold and mildew.
Shingle roofing is lightweight and fire-resistant and can be installed over an existing roof, cutting the installation cost even more. Depending on location, quality of material, and installation, shingle roofs last anywhere from 15 to 25 years—15 to 20 years for three-tab, 20 to 25 years for architecture.
However, asphalt has a shorter life span than other roofing materials, doesn’t provide the insulation other materials offer, and the quality varies. Also, asphalt shingles can be easily blown off in the high wind, scar if hot, attract mold and mildew, and don’t offer the dimensional look of tile or shake. Attic ventilation problems can reduce the shingles’ life so adequate ventilation is very important with this roofing material.
